i keep telling cloud that wings are sexy, but he never listens
No one will probably be interested, but I just throught I'd share my first foray into fanfiction-type writing since the summer of 2006. (It's Kingdom Hearts-related, though the two central characters are from Final Fantasy.)
#01: Motion
Aerith loved to watch Leon move in battle, swinging and firing his gunblade with such ease; she, mainly a healer, could have never fought like he did.
#02: Cool
There was a cool mist coming from the magnificent Rising Falls as Aerith and Leon stood together near the waterfalls, enjoying a moment of peace in Hollow Bastion and trying not to think about when the Heartless would arrive next.
#03: Young
They’d been only teenagers when they had met, part of the group of refugees fleeing the beautiful world of Radiant Garden that had now been twisted by the darkness; they’d been so young then, but now, six years later, they were taking on adult responsibilities as they worked to restore the same world that they had fled.
#04: Last
“So,” Aerith accused Leon one day, her hands on her hips and an uncharacteristically stern expression upon her face, “Cid told me that you and him had a bet seeing how long Sora would last on his quest to destroy the darkness,” and to this accusation Leon merely shrugged and muttered something about how it had been Cid’s idea.
#05: Wrong
Sometimes Leon wondered if Cloud was compensating for something with that big sword of his, and when he told this to Aerith, she laughed and hit his arm affectionately, saying, “Leon, that’s just wrong.”
#06: Gentle
Leon never got tired of her gentle touch, how her soft hands felt against his skin as they lay alone in the dark after a long day of working with the Restoration Committee.
#07: One
Before Leon went out to help with the latest Heartless infestation, he lingered for a moment to say good-bye to Aerith in the doorway of Merlin’s house, but soon a Soldier popped up behind him and he disposed of it quickly, grimly thinking to himself one down, a lot more to go.
#08: Thousand
“You guys better come help,” Yuffie told them as they sat together working at Ansem’s computer, “Apparently we’ve got a major Heartless problem, there’s got to be a thousand of ‘em out near the Dark Depths.”
#09: King
“I think it’s good that Sora, Donald, and Goofy got to see King Mickey,” Aerith said, making idle conversation, but all Leon could think about when he heard the word “king” was the failures of their own king Ansem the Wise.
#10: Learn
At Merlin’s house, there was plenty to learn, and Aerith spent countless hours poring over spellbooks teaching herself new support magic; Leon dismissed these excess amounts of studying until one day when a Heartless hit him a little too hard, and then he was thankful for her healing abilities.
#11: Blur
Leon and Cloud were a blur of motion as they moved about the Dark Depths destroying Heartless left and right, and Aerith only hoped that they wouldn’t end up attacking each other in their enthusiasm.
#12: Wait
Leon got up early one morning, muttering something about wanting to get an early start on the mountain of work that still lay before them, but Aerith got him to pause for a moment as she said, “Wait,” kissing him and making him forget about world restoration for a little while.
#13: Change
Leon had changed over the years, maturing and becoming more serious than Aerith could ever imagine him to be, and shedding the identity of Squall who had failed to protect Radiant Garden to become Leon, who was rebuilding it.
#14: Command
“No, Yuffie,” Leon said tiredly, “you are not allowed make a file on Ansem’s computer about Yuffie the Great Ninja, and this is the last time I’m going to tell you that.”
#15: Hold
Sometimes, when Leon held her in his arms at night, Aerith could convince herself that there was no threat of darkness, and the worlds were at peace forever.
#16: Need
Leon knew that it was his decision to work into the late hours of the night on Ansem’s computer, but there were still times after Aerith had left to get some rest at Merlin’s house when he felt he still needed her presence, longing for the human company that Tron just could not give to him.
#17: Vision
Unless Aerith’s vision was failing her, there now seemed to be a type of Heartless that resembled a flower; with a sigh, she wondered how many other objects she found peaceful and comforting would become corrupted by the Heartless.
#18: Attention
“Could I have your attention, User Leon?” Tron was asking politely, probably trying to inform Leon of something important regarding the computer, but Leon was too busy kissing Aerith to pay attention to him.
#19: Soul
Sometimes Leon felt as if Aerith could see right into his soul whenever she asked in concern whether he was feeling all right and expressed her concerns that he might be working too hard.
#20: Picture
Leon stood in Ansem’s study, staring at the picture of Xehanort, Ansem’s wayward apprentice, and cursed with every fiber of his being the man who had brought about all of this trouble.
#21: Fool
Donald really was a fool, Leon thought bitterly; even though most of the damage that the duck-wizard had caused when he’d been messing around with Ansem’s computer had been fixed, there were still a few miscellaneous errors that popped up every now and then, and Leon immediately blamed these on Donald, much to Aerith’s amusement.
#22: Mad
“I swear, the pair of them are both equally mad,” Leon said to Aerith as Cid and Merlin began yet another squabble over technology while the couple were trying to eat dinner together.
#23: Child
“He’s still just a child,” Leon said in regards to Sora, who would stop in periodically to see them, and Aerith replied to him, “He may still be a child, but he’s our only hope.”
#24: Now
Aerith couldn’t help but smile when, upon being roused from sleep by the sound of a large rumble from outside, Leon got out of bed with tousled hair and gave an irritated grumble of “What is it now?” because she knew that the Heartless should know better than to cause a commotion when Leon was trying to sleep.
#25: Shadow
As Aerith and Leon walked together through the Marketplace, a Shadow popped up in their path; one swing of Leon’s gunblade and it was gone, and Aerith spent the rest of their walk telling him that he was powerful enough to take down any Heartless.
#26: Goodbye
Tron thought that a hug was a User action that meant goodbye; what the computer program didn’t know was that there were so many other things that a hug symbolized, because otherwise Leon and Aerith would have said goodbye too many times to count.
#27: Hide
“Yuffie’s coming,” Aerith told Leon as they sat inside Merlin’s house enjoying some sea-salt ice cream, “so I think it’s time for us to hide the ice cream.”
#28: Fortune
“So you don’t have any treasure,” Yuna of the Gullwings asked Leon one day, “no fortune of any sort that you could give to us?” and Leon only shook his head in response, knowing that his only treasure was Aerith.
#29: Safe
Aerith had told Leon countless times that he made her feel safe, which only made him feel like he had to work harder to protect her so that he wouldn’t be letting her down.
#30: Ghost
Sometimes Leon saw images of his mother in his dreams, and she would only stand there watching him before she said, “I’m proud of you, Squall,” and then disappeared.
#31: Book
As Aerith watched a swarm of Heartless that were beating Sora, Donald, and Goofy with books of all things, she was glad that Leon wielded a more legitimate weapon.
#32: Eye
Aerith’s eyes were the color of life, Leon mused to himself as he saw her wide green eyes focused on him, and life was a good thing to have around while the threat of the darkness was so imminent.
#33: Never
“When do you think Cloud will settle his issues with Sephiroth?” Aerith asked Leon after they had heard that the rivals had met face-to-face yet again, and Leon replied, “Probably never.”
#34: Sing
The next time that Sora came to visit, he was humming under his breath, and when he explained to the Restoration Committee that Ariel had taught him some songs in Atlantica, Leon only brought a hand to his forehead and shook his head at the foolishness of it all, but Aerith thought it was nice that Sora had been able to take a break from saving the worlds.
#35: Sudden
“Aren’t you supposed to be at the castle with Merlin, investigating our next restoration job?” Aerith said to Leon as they were enjoying some time alone in Merlin’s house; with a curse, Leon stood up and left the house, hating how he could suddenly lose track of time and forget his responsibilities when he was with her.
#36: Stop
Aerith found herself strangely amused whenever Donald used Stop magic on a Heartless; she just found it funny to watch him relentlessly beat on an enemy that would be intimidating were it not for the fact that it was frozen in mid-motion and unable to retaliate.
#37: Time
Nights were often the only time that Leon felt as if he could be with Aerith undisturbed, and he savored the nighttime hours that they spent talking and laughing and forgetting the work they had to do as time slipped by.
#38: Wash
Aerith was perfectly happy to wash the dinner dishes by herself after the Restoration Committee had finished dinner, but she was even more pleased when Leon picked up a dishtowel and began to help her, his arm around her waist as they scrubbed the dishes together.
#39: Torn
“I think Sora’s gotten most of the torn pages in that old Winnie-the-Pooh book by now,” Aerith said to Leon one day, “so I was thinking that if we ever need a break maybe we could enter the world of that book one day,” and to this Leon let out a rare laugh and replied, “I can only deal with a certain number of funny animals at a time.”
#40: History
When Leon thought about the events that led to Hollow Bastion being what it was today--six foolish young apprentices, perhaps a little too overenthusiastic about their research on worlds and hearts and darkness--he wasn’t at all surprised about how the world has turned out; after all, he knew from experience that young people loved their foolish, rebellious behavior.
#41: Power
Aerith couldn’t help but marvel at the power of King Mickey; the tiny mouse-king was barely half her size, but he was a living testament to the fact that size did not equal power.
#42: Bother
“So where’s your girlfriend?” Yuffie asked Leon as she looked over his shoulder while he worked on Ansem’s computer; in response he only grit his teeth and wished that he had Aerith for company rather than irritatingly chipper Yuffie.
#43: God
“I’ve been reading that in a lot of worlds people believe in all-powerful beings that have the power to create everything and watch over and protect their creation,” Aerith said to Leon, and he replied after a moment, “Well, if there are beings like that, why don’t they have the power to get rid of the darkness?”
#44: Wall
Although Leon was generally happy enough these days, there were still times when he would become brooding and taciturn, building a wall around himself to keep others away from him, and during these times Aerith was the only one who could break down this wall of his and try to coax him out of his mood.
#45: Naked
Leon was glad that his door had a lock on it; he did not want to imagine Yuffie’s reaction when she came snooping around his room and found him and Aerith entwined together with only a blanket to cover their naked bodies.
#46: Drive
As Aerith watched Sora use his Drive power to fight swarms of Heartless, she idly wondered to herself if she could find Leon some of those powerful clothes that gave their wearer mighty strength in battle.
#47: Harm
Aerith was walking to the Marketplace to do some shopping when suddenly a Soldier appeared; as it lunged at her, Leon was soon at her side, slaying the Heartless and giving it a look that clearly said If you Heartless ever do her any harm, you’ll be at the mercy of my gunblade.
#48: Precious
Aerith was already asleep by the time Leon came home from a day of work over at the castle; she was still in the clothes she had worn that day, the pink hair ribbon that she always wore still tied around her long brown braid, and so Leon gently reached over and undid the ribbon, holding it in his hands like it was a piece of precious cloth.
#49: Hunger
The Heartless hungered for hearts; Leon realized that he hungered for the company of others, as much as he hated to admit it sometimes, because he found himself haunted by the strange fear of being alone.
#50: Believe
“Do you really think this will all be over one day?” Aerith asked Leon as they lay together in bed listening to the racket that the Heartless were making outside, and he replied to her with what he thought was a startlingly large amount of conviction, “Yes, I believe it will.”
Prompts come from the community 1sentence, which I'd try to link to except for the fact that apparently LJ doesn't like me or my linking attempts. I've decided I'm rather fond of this style of writing, though; it's very non-commitment-like. (Makes it sound like I'm having relationship issues with writing.) I've also really been loving Aerith/Leon lately, and I've discovered that they're rather easy to write.
